What is National Adoption Month and Why is it Important?
The month of November is home to many events. The end of fall, Thanksgiving, and National Adoption Month. Of all of these events, National Adoption Month probably isn’t the first thing you think about. Perhaps you weren’t even aware that there wasa National Adoption month, let alone that it was in November.

What is National Adoption Month?
It all started in 1976. Massachusetts’ Mike Dukakis, who was the governor at the time, announced the idea of the nation’s first ever Adoption Week. His concept quickly grew in popularity across the United States. In 1984, President Ronald Reagan expanded on this and created the first National Adoption Week. Then, in 1995, President Bill Clinton changed it from a week to the whole month of November.
Why is National Adoption Month so Important?
As a whole, National Adoption Month is dedicated to spreading awareness about adoption. The existence of birth mothers, adoptive parents and adoptees and the need for children to find loving homes. It also promotes the importance of all members in the adoption triad establishing strong and healthy relationships with each other. These relationships, in turn, will guarantee that the adoption journey will run smoother and be more successful.
During the month of November, if you or someone you know is wanting to begin the adoption process, attend a local adoption-related event in person or online. Watch a movie or read a book that is dedicated to teaching you about adoption — whether fiction or nonfiction. Find a support group specifically for birth mothers, adoptive parents or adoptees. Reach out to trusted friends and family to start building the support system you will need as you embark on your adoption journey. These can all prove to be invaluable resources.
